This paper studies the impact of Information Technology on the role of women in
Traditional societies, primarily Malaysia.
Traditional Societies have well-established religious and social structures and unbroken customs with
clearly-defined roles for women.
The introduction of information Technology into these societies means that women will be performing tasks
where the use of IT becomes more and more common.
As a result the women will operate in a 'hands-on' mode with IT and will find that their tasks will be
extended into areas which previously were beyond their scope.
The Research Method aimed to identify the nature and extent of any changes which came about
because of the use of IT.
It involved the use of a Questionnaire to gather relevant data from the target population, which was
predominantly composed of Muslim Women in Malaysia.
The Questionnaire was distributed both by post and over the Internet, and the power of the Internet was
used to facilitate the execution of the Research Project.
The Findings of the Project concluded that there is evidence that Information Technology
can be seen as an agent of change which is having a positive impact on the role of women
in Traditional societies.
